2026 Big 12 Football Tiebreaker Rules

• The two teams with the best conference winning percentages qualify for the championship game.
• If exactly two teams tie for first, both qualify and the procedure determines the No. 1 seed.
• If teams tie for the remaining second berth, the procedure selects the No. 2 seed.

The Big 12 uses the same ordered sequence to choose a second participant or seed two teams that already qualified.

When one team gains an advantage, that team is seeded and the remaining tie restarts. When only two teams remain, the two-team procedure takes over.

1. 1.Compare winning percentage among the tied teams. In an incomplete round robin, a team that defeated every other tied team takes the available seed.
2. 2.Compare record against all common conference opponents.
3. 3.Compare record against the next highest-placed common conference opponent, moving down the standings.
4. 4.Compare the conference winning percentage of each team’s conference opponents.
5. 5.Compare eligible total wins under the policy’s FCS and NCAA-exempt-game limits.
6. 6.Use the SportSource Analytics Team Rating Score after the regular season.
7. 7.Use a coin toss if every prior criterion remains tied.

• Only conference games count in the head-to-head and common-opponent stages. Games between two Big 12 schools that were officially designated nonconference must stay excluded.
• The total-wins stage counts no more than one win over an FCS or lower-division opponent and excludes games exempt from the NCAA annual maximum.
• SportSource data and an actual coin toss are external to the schedule model. CFB APP keeps those official outcomes separate from simulations.

• The September 2024 document was season-specific. The November 2025 version changed its opening language to “2024–Present” while retaining the same criterion order and operating rules.
• The current evidence supports applying that published 16-team policy in 2026 unless the conference issues a replacement.
