Format and selection
NCAA championship selection
40 teams in a single-elimination playoff. Recorded games are organized by round.
- Conference automatic qualifiers and at-large teams fill a 40-team field under the NCAA championship manual.
- The NCAA Power Index is used for at-large selection in the 2025–26 manual. Geography and championship bracketing rules also affect placement.
These are documented selection procedures. They do not explain why a particular participant was chosen unless the source expressly records that decision.
History
The NCAA has organized this national championship since 1973.
A single-elimination bracket determines the champion. The field size and qualifying arrangements changed over time.
