Format and selection

NCAA championship selection

The final of the Division III national playoff.

  1. The two semifinal winners in the Division III playoff advance to the Stagg Bowl. The bowl does not select teams independently.

These are documented selection procedures. They do not explain why a particular participant was chosen unless the source expressly records that decision.

History

The Stagg Bowl began as a western NCAA College Division regional championship in 1969. It became the Division III national championship game when the national playoffs began in 1973.

The bowl is the final round of the Division III playoff, rather than an independently selected invitation game. The final and the playoff overview share one recorded game.
