Format and selection
BCS
One championship game between the top two teams in the final BCS standings.
- The two highest teams in the final BCS standings qualified for the championship game.
- The standings combined human polls and computer ratings. Their components and weighting changed during the BCS era; this edition does not substitute today’s CFP committee rules.
These are documented selection procedures. They do not explain why a particular participant was chosen unless the source expressly records that decision.
History
The Bowl Championship Series began in 1998. Its championship matchup initially rotated among the Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and Rose bowls.
Beginning with the 2006 season, the title game became a separate contest at a rotating BCS bowl site. The CFP replaced the BCS after the 2013 season.
